[AK] Facts About Pakistan – US-Dependent Foreign Policy

This note will explain the nature of Pakistan’s foreign policy in 2017. Source: https://thediplomat.com/2017/12/can-pakistan-pursue-an-independent-foreign-policy/

Pakistan’s foreign policy is still not independent, in a sense that it’s still oriented towards US (and recently, Chinese) interests. The reason is three:

1. Islamic conservatism which prevents Pakistan from pursuing economic/diplomatic cooperation with certain countries such as Israel and India. Any attempt to do so will most likely results in riots and distrust towards their government.

2. Military-civilian divide, each faction equally influential in Pakistani politics but have different visions about how their foreign policy should be. The military seems to be comfortable with only rhetorical statements of “we will pursue an independent foreign policy”, the civilian elite faction thinks otherwise.

3. Economic dependency which means that Pakistan is forced to follow the demands of economic powerhouses (case study: China-Pakistan economic corridor, on the article)
